Accident and Emergency Department

 You can visit the accident and emergency department (A&E) for emergency care 24 hours a day, seven days a week with a referral from a general practitioner (GP) or paramedics.

IF THE SITUATION IS LIFE-THREATENING

In life-threatening situations, always call 112. 

IF THE SITUATION IS NOT LIFE-THREATENING

• Call your GP or a physician near you
• Outside of office hours, call the out-of-hours GP service (Dirksland, Klaaswaal, Spijkenisse, Zierikzee). The GP may refer you to the A&E if necessary.

What to bring

• Proof of identity (passport, driver's license or identity card)
• Health insurance card
• Your medication

How we work at the accident and emergency department

• When you arrive at the A&E, we start by checking your personal information.
• If you have been in a foreign hospital in the past three months or work on an agricultural farm with pigs or veal calves, please notify us immediately due to the possibility of infection with the MRSA bacteria. Please also notify us if you are known to have any other hospital bacteria.
• We will try to help you as soon as possible. In some cases, you may have to wait longer, such as when other patients need more urgent care.
• A nurse will come to collect you when it is your turn. You will be examined to establish a diagnosis.
• After the examination, the doctor will discuss the results and treatment options with you. If necessary, you will be admitted to the hospital, otherwise, you may go home.

Costs

• A visit to the A&E comes out of your insurance excess. This means you will pay the cost yourself if you have not yet used your excess.
• If you are not insured or do not have European insurance, you must pay the costs yourself. You can pay a deposit and receive an invoice from us at your home address. You can then self-report the costs to your insurance company.
